Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint Vincent (1778-1846) was a French political, naturalist, officer. 

In 1799, he learned the departure of a scientific expedition to Australia organized by the government and obtained thanks to his uncle and the recommendation of Agen Bernard-Germain de Lacépède, the place of chief botanist aboard one of the three participating corvettes. Thus, after leaving the Western army at the end of August and then obtaining indefinite leave from the War Ministry, Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent left Paris on 30 September and embarked at Le Havre on 19 October 1800 aboard the schooner of Captain Nicolas Baudin, The Naturaliste.

After stops in Madeira, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, then crossing the Cape of Good Hope, towards the middle of the voyage Bory suddenly leaves the ship of Captain Baudin with whom he entered the conflite and then explores alone (and with limited resources) several islands in the African sea. During a stopover, he stopped in Mauritius in March 1801. From there he reached the nearby island of La Réunion,where in October 1801 he made the ascent and the first general scientific description of the Piton de la Fournaise, the island’s active volcano. He gives the name of his former teacher Dolomieu, whose death he has just learned, to one of the craters which he describes as a nipple. It gives its own name to the summit crater, the Bory crater. On his way back, he continued his geographical, physical and botanical explorations on the island of Sainte-Hélène.

He returned to metropolitan France on 11 July 1802 and learned that his mother had died during his absence. He published his Essai sur les Îles Fortunées (archipelago of the Canary Islands) and in 1804, his "Voyage dans les quatre principales îles des mers d'Afrique".
