Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids. That is, they are vital for our health, but the human body can’t make them on its own. We have to get them from our food. Of all the fatty acids, omega-3s are probably the most important. Since the omega-3s cannot be created by the body, the easiest way to obtain the healthy fats is to eat cold water fatty fish such as salmon or to take a fish oil supplement. Specifically, the important omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil are EPA and DHA. DHA is by far the most beneficial omega-3 fatty acid for the body because it plays a key role in maintaining healthy mental performance-cognitive function, focus, memory, and learning ability.
Like omega-3s, omega-6 fatty acids play a critical role in brain function. They also help stimulate skin and hair growth, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and maintain the reproductive system. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid found in certain oils, such as evening primrose oil and borage oil. When consumed, much of it is converted to another fatty acid called dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). One study showed that taking a high dose of GLA supplements significantly reduced a number of symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Unlike the 3s and 6s, omega 9 fatty acids are not considered essential fatty acids because our bodies can make omega-9s in small amounts. Omega-9s are used by the body when the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are not readily present. Primarily, omega-9 has a positive health effect on the lowering of cholesterol levels, reducing of insulin resistance, and boosting the immune system.
