Electric & ' Acoustic ' fashion !! This DVD is exceptional, and it is an Absolute ! " Must-Have " for Dead fans ( & Especially ! the Late-70's / Early 80's Fans !! ) due to the fact that you not only receive the original " Dead Ahead " release in entirety ... but you also receive " Bonus Song Footage " totaling 50 additional minutes ! Here you get never before seen ( and Smokin' Hot ! ) Live versions of Heaven Help The Fool - Shakedown Street - Samson & Delilah - He's Gone & Truckin' ! from the 10/30/80 Radio City performance. This is the Grateful Dead at one of their main " Prime " Eras, and interestingly enough it catches them not only celebrating their 15 year Touring-Celebration, but it also marks the 10 year anniversary of the Legendary 1970 Tours ! which 1st featured the Band performing Acoustic Sets, along with Electric Sets. There is Song Material offered here that wasn't in the rotation back in '70, and to be frank ... Garcia's voice is Sweet ! & Brilliant !! and he is delivering the acoustic goods on a stern bass-heavy HD-35 Martin Acoustic Guitar ! The whole Band is crystal-clear tight, and they are really in ' Dead-Sync ! ' form. The percussion work by Billy & Micky is in a trans-formative acoustic stage and my goodness do they rise to the occasion & deliver ! Phil backs the unit with Electric Bass, consistently delivering the precision timing that only Phil can do & Ace is sporting a fine-sounding Ovation acoustic model that fills every musical gap with perfection. Also, Bob's solo material has now entered the song rotation, and the delivery of Heaven Help The Fool ( instrumental ) displays awesome musicianship. This track is captured on the Bonus Footage, so if you have only seen the original " Dead Ahead " release until now, you are in for a Real Treat ! One last thing to mention ( just for fun ) - at one point during Good Lovin' - Bobby is really bringing the mustard ( or the ' cheese ? ' - depending how you look at it ) and the camera is shooting dead-on Jerry ... at that point he gives one of the Greatest Smiles ( & Eye-Rolls ! ) ever-captured on Video, as an on-stage reaction to Weir's Showman ' Antics ' ! This Video simply marks one of the greatest tours in Rock History !!! - which only happened in three cities ( S.F. - New Orleans & N.Y ) and for the obvious reasons stated here & way beyond - it is Truly ! a must-have for all serious Deadheads. Dead Fans !!! ... and as it goes without saying -- '80's Dead Fans !!!!! Because here offered is an Ultra-Rare ! & Stellar !! " Bonus Disc " CD offering Rare / Previously-Unreleased Tracks ( 5-Tracks ! ) from the Legendary ! October 1980 Radio City Music Hall run in New York City !!! Obviously, this period being the ' mouth ' of the Amazing " Brent-Era " - and the birth ( 1st year ! ) of " The '80's " ... well, we all knew that we would most likely be in for a Very-Special treat when this one was released - way back in 2005 ! Wow, how time does fly ... Many/most fans have seen the " Dead Ahead " Video in one form, or another over the years - but in 2005, it was re-released/remastered, had Bonus Footage added, etc.. - in truly all of it's glory ! Just an amazing project, at least in my opinion - as all of the pieces of the puzzle were already there ( Thankfully ! ) for this to be done well -- and as you've probably seen yourself ... Real ! Well. Just about perfect multi-angle, pro-shot footage, and state of the art analog-recorded sound -- as I believe the Masters of the Audio were on Cassette ? I think so indeed, but would have to check on that to be 100% certain it wasn't reel-to-reel - either way, it's superb. Kind of like the ' other ' big 2005 release - " Fillmore West : The Complete Recordings " ... both of these shows were recorded audio-wise, as perfectly as Humanly, and Deadheadedly possible ! Deadheadedly ... nice word ! As I think I just made that one up ! I'd hate to take the credit ... but not sure I've heard that ' term ' before. I like it, I like it ! But ... Yes ! - the main difference with Radio City ( being '80 ), and Fillmore West ( being '69 ) - was that Radio City was Filmed !!! Thank goodness ... G.D. had the budget, I suppose - or maybe Bill ! made it happen ... but most importantly, it did happen. Gotta love it. So ... with this Amazing ! " Bonus Disc CD " - you get the Five Audio Tracks ( 5-Tracks ! ) from the ' Bonus Footage ' of the 10/30/80 Radio City Music Hall Show, and for all serious audiophiles - and of course for collectors of the Rarest ! & Grate-est ! of Grateful Dead releases ... this one is a no-brainer - you know, one of those " Must-Haves " ! It's a shame this whole 10/30/80 Night couldn't be released in entirety -- because the Boys sure are ' On-it ' !!! Phil's Energy is just Awesome ! throughout tons of this October '80 run, and I'm not just talkin' about the N.Y.C. gigs - as that also goes for the Warfield & New Orleans runs ! And Bobby, and that Ovation ? Whoa ! That's just a match made in Heaven ! ... Heaven Help The Fool !!! Ahh ... and as for Brent ! - the early-days, and the tones are just settling-in - nicely ... all throughout, you can feel his energy & affect on the band. B.K. & Mick ? Keeping-the-time like Madmen !!! Both ! Electric & Acoustic for these runs ... beautiful. And Garcia ? tasty-Tasty ! work on that Mu-Tron envelope filter - just a fabulous sign of the times, and his fret board-attacks can be full of love, and/or vicious, raw, and just flat-out mean ! Garcia does what he wants in this period. And unlike most-other Fans ? I truly-believe this Era in the Late-'70's / Early-'80's was the beginning stages of him becoming all he could be as a Guitar Player !! Sure, he played for ' himself ' a little more in the Early-'80's ... but, anyone who is a guitarist will tell you ( if they are being honest ) ... hey, what's wrong with that ? The only difference is - this guy is the King of Rock ' Roll !!! ... and in this magical period - Fall Tour '80 ? ... he's seriously Blossoming !! Just magical-stuff, at least to this humble Dead Fan's ears. So here the ' typed-version ', of this here Magic ... Heaven Help The Fool - Shakedown Street > Samson And Delilah - He's Gone > Truckin' !!!!!
