Mexican Rebel

Pascual Orozco and the Mexican

Revolution, 1910-1915

By Michael C. Meyer

In this study of General Pascual Orozco, Jr.-the first full-length biography of Orozco to appear in either Spanish or English-the author's primary aim is to analyze the General's revolutionary career and to trace the course of the 1910 revolution in Chihuahua. Orozco's contributions to the conception and growth of the revolutionary phenomenon were multiple, but his chief importance is found in his rapprochement with the masses in northern Mexico-the people who would comprise the rank and file of the revolutionary army and eventually implement its success-and in the military leadership which he provided during the protracted series of campaigns. Mr. Meyer's careful analysis of Orozco's revolutionary career also serves to unravel the maze of revolts and counter-revolts which so often render incomprehensible the first five years of the Mexican upheaval.

The author has used much new documentary material, including the records of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations, the Archivo His-torico de la Defensa Nacional, and the Madero Collection of the Biblioteca Nacional. He has also scrutinized the voluminous secondary literature to indicate the hazards of placing oneself entirely in either the pro-revolutionary or anti-revolutionary school. During the course of his research for this study, Mr. Meyer spent two years in Mexico City and examined materials in private collections in northern Mexico.
