This bank, The Peoples National Bank of Steubenville, was the sixth and last national bank which was chartered in Steubenville.  Three of the six banks have either, none, 1 or only 2 notes reported.  So only this bank, the National Exchange Bank, and the Commercial National Bank are readily available.  This bank has the least amount of large size notes reported of the three: only 19 large size notes are known to survive.  Of the 19, only six notes have appeared, this being the highest grade known by far.  In fact, of all the large size notes, this is THE HIGHEST Grade, period.
This bank was chartered in April of 1905.  It issued Red Seals ( to which none are known,) Datebacks and Plainbacks. This note was issued between September 1925 and August 17th, 1929 when the large notes ceased to be issued.    For the life of this bank during the national bank era, only L.L. Grimes was the cashier.  There were a total of four presidents.  The rubber stamp signatory on this note is F.M. Work, the third person to occupy this office.  The dates of his office were between 1917 to 1933.
Condition:  This notes condition is spectacular!!  It is crisp and appears CU to the novice.  But to the trained eye, it has been professionally pressed.  If one looks carefully at the photos, one can see the three faint vertical folds interrupting the ink and a diagonal fold at the top left corner.  The census grades this as an EF(40); slitting hairs, this seller would call this an EF(45) for its paper brightness, bold body and stunning appearance.  Surely this should be the crown jewel to any collector seeing this bank.  This note exceeds all other large size notes in condition by far.  The closest are three VF-30s (only one being TPGed.)
Pricing:  $20 02PB Serial number 8389 was sold as EF(45), and not TPGed, was sold here on eBay for $595 in March of 2021.  That note is listed in both censi as a VF.  The note before you is substantially better.  We will be happy to supply a photo of that note if requested for your comparison.

We have priced this accordingly at $675 and it is well worth this price.

With this description, perhaps we can bring history alive to you and let you genuinely touch a piece of it.  Anyone can offer a banknote.  But we strive to bring history alive to the new owner of this piece of banking history.  A copy of the description will accompany all orders for your future reference.

Quality is like oats:  it is cheaper after the horse than before.  Always, always buy quality.  It is what gains the fastest in price. Good notes are not cheap, and cheap notes are not good.  Quality, QUALITY, QUALITY

N.B.  Sales tax may be an issue for you when purchasing.  Depending upon the state of delivery, you may have sales tax, you may have none, or you may subject to a threshold tax.  PLEASE ASK.  Ebay tells me they are prepared to give refunds for states which have no tax. even though a sales tax may be implemented at the time of sale.  This seller will always assist you.  I have the information on the sales tax applicability for each state. So please consult me.  I have been instrumental in obtaining over $10,000 in sales tax refunds for my eBay clients.  My service for this is FREE to my clients.    My personal issue: sales tax is a levy on tangible personal property.  By definition, all money is intangible, so why should it be taxed at all?  Ever!

This note has no tears, pinholes nor ink stains.

N.B.  All reasonable offers considered.  Offers of half price and below market are respectfully declined.  We are a legitimate business and have all the costs associated with shipping, eBay fees.  So, please, consider carefully your reasonable offer.

P.S.:  If you are wondering why a dealer from Miami, Florida is dealing in Ohio National Currency, it is because I spend about 6 months of the year in Ohio, as well.  In Ohio, I am known as a dealer’s dealer and am consulted by other dealers and financial institutions for price guidance and as an acquisition specialist.  The point is: my prices are NOT taken out of the air.  They are carefully decided by the market and rationality.
