Patek Philippe Calatrava, the standard bearer for time-only dress watches.

This is a great opportunity, for any and all vintage watch collectors, to step up to the iconic 7 mm ultra-thin Patek Philippe's Calatrava reference 2591 from the mid 60s, with original dial, manual winding Patek Philippe caliber 23-300, Patek Philippe embossed signed crown and original Patek Philippe "Coffin" watch box. Professionally serviced in-house this week !

Find out what the mystique is all about...

The Patek Philippe's Calatrava line was first introduced in 1932, a time of transformation wrought by the Great Depression, and is still considered to be the flagship model of Patek Philippe.

The Patek Philippe Calatrava has been widely regarded as the standard bearer for time-only dress watches. It was the watch that ushered in a new era for Patek Philippe with the two brothers Jean and Charles Stern at it helm. In contrast to the flamboyant styles of the previous decades as exemplified by the Gondolo, the Calatrava was round, yet unfaltering in its design, encapsulating the dynamics of modernism, namely Bauhaus — the ideas of "less is more" and "form follows function." Featuring sleek lines and classic elegance, it style has endured into our modern time with only subtle changes.

This 7 mm ultra-thin Calatrava is a must have for any discerning collectors and furthermore one of the most interesting "time-only" wristwatch produced by Patek in the mid 60s.

At Patek Philippe, designing and crafting cases has always been just as important as calibre engineering, which for most people is the essence of watchmaking. So it is not surprising that the manufacture has had its own casemaking department for decades and masters all disciplines in this domain from the very first sketches to the flawlessly polished cases. A close look at the Calatrava Ref. 2591 from all angles with a loupe reveals that this watch can only be a Patek Philippe. Not only because it is a Calatrava, but also because of its finesse and abundance of fascinating details for which the manufacture is acclaimed.

It takes more than 1,200 operations to create one Patek Philippe watch!
Between three and five years are spent creating a new mechanical movement. Six hundred hours of quality control checks are undertaken during manufacture. Only after all this are they ready to put their name to a watch. Each watch is individually assembled and polished by hand. It is this dedication to perfection that has kept their reputation for workmanship unmatchable for so many years.

DIAL : A complication is a pretty thing but it certainly doesn’t improve the legibility of a watch’s time display. And since the time of day is the most frequently sought information on a watch’s dial, it makes perfect sense to concentrate on the bare essentials: hours and minutes. Even the presence of a date display can detract from the perfect harmony and clarity of a dial.

The beauty of this Patek Philippe's Calatrava resides in his simplicity. Absolutely nothing superfluous can be found on this watch. The gold dial, with applied golden index hour markers and baton hands is in very nice condition and only a light water mark surrounding the 3 o'clock hour marker prevents this dial to be graded as mint condition! Also, the signature "Patek Philippe, Genève" remains crisp and perfectly legible in black. Two pointed and faceted baton style hands, in yellow gold, for the hours and minutes, occupy this graceful stage.

CROWN : This ultra-thin Calatrava watch is fitted with its original gold Patek Philippe embossed signed crown. Notice how even the serrated edges of the winding crown here are crisp and well defined, telling us that this piece has been a cherished possession of its former owner

MOVEMENT : —Professionally serviced THIS WEEK with SERVICE RECORD dated from May 02, 2024 ! When one buys a classic Patek Philippe, a genuinely unique, undiluted product of this venerable house is acquired, and many collectors find this factor a very appealing one.

Original movement is the Patek Philippe manual winding Caliber 23-300, 23 mm (10 line) in diameter and only 3 mm tall, stamped twice with the Seal of Geneva quality mark, fausses cotes decoration, 18 jewels, frequency of 19,800 vph, a full eight weight Gyromax balance and free sprung overcoil hairspring, straight-line lever escapement, self-compensating blued steel Breguet balance spring, micrometer regulator, adjusted to temperature, isochronism and 5 positions. The movement also bears the elegant Patek Philippe & Co signature, in gold, and engraved serial number, 789695.

The round calibre Patek Philippe's 10'' calibre 23-300 was produced from 1956 to 1977, when at the first stirrings of the quartz revolution it was replaced with the present calibre 215. Others may disagree, but we feel that the 215 is a step down from its predecessor. The 23-300 is one of Pateks most refined and sophisticated movements and one of the very few movements manufactured by Patek Philippe to use both an overcoil hairspring and a free-sprung Gyromax balance, and of which it was the only 10''' handwind. Caliber 23-300 represents both the technical and artistic peak of Patek's 10 ligne handwinds, as the 27-AM 400 was the peak of their 12 lignes.
This caliber is of truly classical Patek Philippe layout, with the barrel bridge covering ratchet and crown wheel, classic steel plate cap jewel for the escape wheel and fixed stud, the elegantly curved center wheel bridge and seperate cocks for fourth and escape wheel. It could be called the successor of cal 10-200 although it was in use quite some time in parallel with 23-300. It is a movement rooted, not in the mechanical revival and display-back pandemonium of the 1990's, but in a long Patek Philippe tradition of impeccable craft. With a few very tiny exceptions, the caliber 23-300 is difficult to fault. Careful craft is evident in every detail of the movement, both functional and aesthetic, whether visible to the casual owner or not.

Patek Philippe has given it the fine finishing and decorative flourishes associated with the best Geneva watchmaking: Geneva waves, beveled and polished edges that were polished into the plates by hand with a rotating boxwood disk, individual screw heads slots have been mirror polished to perfection, satin-finished transmission wheel and ratchet wheel, and polished flanks on the gears’ teeth. Throughout the movement, the treatment of edges is carried out with an eye to craft and a taste for caprice. Anglage (angling of plate and bridge edges) is partially functional. It eliminates sharp corners that would otherwise be damaged during service. It thus reduces the amount of debris than can fall into the movement and disturb function.

This movement has been serviced regularly throughout its life and is completely original throughout with no changed or non-standard components whatsoever. Today, this movement runs smoothly and keeps time, and its standard of engineering and construction is so high that, with little more than routine cleaning and lubrication every three or four years, it will continue to do so almost infinitely in the future.

It is no exaggeration to think that a watch of this standard from the mid 60s will be more than capable of out lasting anyone who purchases it now, and this potential for longevity is one that makes fine vintage wristwatches attractive to many modern day buyers.

CASE : The eye catching solid 18K yellow gold Calatrava ultra-thin case with exquisite design alternates between polished and brushed surfaces and is in very nice condition. Case dimensions are 34.5 mm diameter without counting the winding crown, 35.5 mm with crown, and only 7 mm thick with its glass. The bezel is slim and low-key enough to give the impression that the delicately shimmering dial sits directly on the wrist.

Case is a two body, solid 18K yellow gold, with a snap-on case back. It was crafted with traditional cold-forming techniques in high tonnage hydraulic presses using precision dies also made in-house by Patek Philippe.

Internally, the snap on case back is correctly hallmarked for solid 18K Gold and is signed “Patek Philippe & Co, GENEVE, SWISS, 18K 0,750, Ref. 2591", and carries the case serial number 428812.

STRAP : We have fitted this watch with a new generic brown leather strap and gold tone pin-buckle that, while not being Patek Philippe items, are perfectly in keeping with the theme of the watch. Both are in new condition, having never been worn.

In summary, this is a particularly appealing Patek Philippe's Calatrava, in a rare large 34.5 mm size.

Twenty years ago, original Patek Philippe watches from the mid 60s were already difficult to find and today, they have virtually dried up entirely. The simple fact of the matter is that, quite understandably, those collectors who do own these kind of high end luxury watches don't see any reason to part with them in the present rapidly rising market.

!!! Few easy steps to keep your fine vintage watch in rude health:
- Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard.
- When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement.
- If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours).
- Vintage watches generally experience an error of up to 2 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 2 minutes is very good.

- High altitude flights can be hard on watches due to extreme temperature changes. This can cause the oil viscosity to decrease (gum up) and prevent a watch from ticking (the balance moving freely etc.). It may need to be oiled when it arrives regardless of its recent servicing (if applicable). Although this is only a very slight possibility it can occasionally happen.

Please bear in mind that you are buying a used watch and it will require service at some point in time.

If you have any questions after reading the description or viewing the pictures please email us prior to bidding.
