The early B-17
Flying Fortesses did not have engine cowl flaps, however, the Academy models of
the early Fortresses did not properly model this feature. If you look at photos of these early model
aircraft, you will see a distinct opening just behind the cowl rings. This was hidden by the cowl flaps that were
added in later model Fortresses. This
resin upgrade supplies a more accurate engine mounting that rounds off the nose
of the nacelle and also depicts the exposed carb inlet ducting at the 12
o’clock position. This mod requires
cutting off the front 0.27” of the plastic kit nacelle and replacing it with
the resin piece. The kit engine will fit
into the recess of the resin part (clean up with a size B drill, 0.238” diameter
to give a nice fit).
This would also be
a good way to display open cowl flaps on later B-17 models – just add open
flaps and actuators.
These Academy kits
are the only game in town for an injection-molded early B-17 and they are very
nicely molded and generally accurate, but they are pretty sparse on interior
detail. I also offer some upgrades based
on the excellent new Airfix B-17 models – radio compartment details and main
landing gear well details. These work
great with the early B-17s, so look for my other auctions.
