This auction is for a large and detailed steel plate engraving entitled “CLEOPATRA” which features the Egyptian Queen from classical antiquity. In this scene, she is on her deathbed, having been bitten by a snake. The print was published by “George Barrie, Publisher,” after a painting by Baroque master “Guido Reni, Pinx,” and printed / engraved by “Shenton & Bowney, Sc.” It was printed in Philadelphia in the 1880s. It is very large (folio sized -- it won’t fit on my scanner!), measuring 30 x 43 cm, with the inside image itself being 20 x 25 cm. The engraving is printed on heavy rag paper (almost as heavy as flexible cardboard!). The condition is, for a print this age, very good. It is overall clean with a minor ink dot toward lower right corner. Top margin has a minor crease. Both these flaws would be concealed if framed. Otherwise, the print has no stains, no foxing, no creases, and the back is blank. This would look super if it was properly matted & framed. Top bidder should add $9.90 for postage in Canada, $12.90 for mailing to the USA.  A quality, collectable antique print, which would be a great addition to the collection of anyone interested in Victorian 19th century art, portraits from Classical antiquity, the engraver’s art, or history and so on. Full refund if not happy – thanks for looking!
