***Why has this fascination continued for over 100 years? Probably because of the Shay's combination of "business" (thrashing engine motion) and flashing moving parts, with an unusual collection of noises. Sort of like something between a Ford Model T and a Kenworth Tractor (when the driver "misses a shift"). Add to all the "clanking", the sounds of the boiler coming apart at the seams, and lastly the Shay whistle when pulled by the engineer who "loved railroading".
