An Important WW1 Highland Light Infantry Triple Gallantry Medal group with lots of photographs, history, military records, bravery citations and original commissions etc. signed by King George and Churchill.

A long listing - but this man deserves it! Interested buyers are welcome to come and view in Peebles (South of Edinburgh)

There's so much here - it's hard to know where to start - this was all obtained directly from Robert Speirs Dixon's descendents/family (via auction with personal contact and further purchases afterwards) for my own collection. I am now selling the cream of my collection off - having sold all the average items already- see my other listings for some super medal groups.

This group forms an amazing picture of determination and bravery - to cut a long story short - he joined the HLI just before WW1 as an 18 year old 2nd lieutenant - he was twice wounded and returned to the UK to recuperate and help run the forestry operation for the land army while he convalesced (a unit he was in prior to the start of the war as a 2nd lieutenant and then at the end of the war in his substantive rank of Major). He returned to the front BOTH times - he went from 2nd lieutenant to 1st to Captain to Major - to acting Lt. Colonel in charge of the regiment at the age of 22 (all other senior officers having been killed or wounded).
He was very close to a VC - awarded the MC and DSO (a proper one - not a pat on the back one for a senior HQ officer) - I quote;

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He conducted a daring reconnaissance clearing up a difficult situation, and afterwards was of great assistance in organising and rallying men of other divisions during the battle. When his commanding officer fell he took command, continued the counter-attack, and drove the enemy out of the area. Later, he led his men with great determination and courage against vastly superior numbers, thereby materially assisting the retirement of the whole division"
In fact, he ran to the "other division" which had went to ground after all their officers had been killed on his left front through murderous  machine gun fire and artillery and got them up and attacking - then seeing the "other division" way on his right was in the same state - he ran back through it all to the right flank and got them moving - incredible! Oh - and he was "mentioned in despatches".

This group contains his
- Distinguished Service Order in original Garrard fitted case with "Secretary of the War Office receipt dated 26/07/1915 (probably when it was delivered to the war office). Slight rub/scrape to surface of white enamel on rear.
- Solid silver MC in fitted case - crisp, uncleaned, slightly tarnished.
- His Miniature medals - DSO, MC, 1914/15 Star, war and victory medal with Oak Leaf MID.
these have been worn - court mounted (glued to hessian or other fabric) and still show signs of mounting on the rear of the ribbons, the 14/15 star was pinned back on when it fell off the mount!).
- a photo taken in 1911 when he was an "Officer Cadet (Uppingham School)
- a photo from 1914 - when presented to HM King George V
- DSO appointment signed by King George in pen
- Mention in Despatches facsimile signed by Winston Churchill as secretary of state for war
- his two temporary commissions to the "Land Army" - 20/02/1914 & 19/12/1919 - both pencil signed by King George (or an efficient secretary?)
- Full record of service 12th Bn. THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY - together with a hand written letter from Northern Command dated 01/06/1926 - he obviously requested a typed copy of this and it is full of his own annotations and corrections

- copy of Army lists for the war years showing his promotion
- copy of Highland Light Infantry Chronicle - highlighted for Speirs Dixon
