HINDLEY, Charles. SHEPARD, Leslie. Curiosities of Street Literature. London: The Broadsheet King. 1966. 4tos. Two volumes. First editions. Patterned boards. Profusely illustrated throughout with colour paper.

An interesting and important work showcasing the best of the broadsheets in Victorian times, which worked as a forerunner to the tabloid newspaper and were a popular outlet in getting news out quickly and widely. The volumes reproduce many of Hindley’s findings on the broadsheets, which were often most popular and read when concerning crime and murder—famous cases are included here, such as Burke and Hare, child-killer Constance Kent and the Red Barn Murder. The broadsheets also cover political events, elopements, deaths, and important and sometimes seemingly trivial newsbits. Before Hindley, little studies were undertaken on the subject. A very good set, the cloth spines gently bumped, both bindings tight and square, corners gently rubbed, but internally fine.
