Here we have a Vintage UNION HARDWARE CO., TORRINGTON, CT Lot of 4 Beveled Firmer Socket Chisels. Chisel researchers seem to be settled on the position that the highly regarded Witherby Co. was contracted to manufacture the 'Samson' line of Union HDW Co. chisels. They have also speculated that since Witherby was located in Winsted, Conn, (only 9 mi. from Torrington, CT), it wasn't much of a stretch to assume that Witherby also made Union chisels that were NOT marked 'Samson'. That is what this lot of 4 chisels are. They are NOT marked 'Samson'. They are faintly marked: "MFG by Union Hardware Co. Torrington CONN. U.S.A.” These chisels certainly look like Witherby chisels. Regardless of the marking, the 'Chisel Gurus' rate Union HDW Co. very highly for quality of steel and edge retention. The lot is in Very good 'used tool' condition with minor wear to the surfaces. The hickory handles have nice leather washer ends. NO cracks in the handles ! The sizes are: 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", and 1-1/2". The chisel lengths run from 13" to 13-1/2". No owner marks.
