First-year rooted plant.

Bloody dock is a perennial in the buckwheat family that grows in tight clumps of lime green leaves with deep red veins. It enjoys full sun, but will also grow in shade in moist, well-draining soil. These beauties work well in landscaping or large container plantings. The long taproot makes this plant a dynamic accumulator.

The leaves are edible but contain oxiolic acid (like spinach), so eating them in large in quantities could upset the stomach. The young leaves can be eaten in salads and the larger leaves can cooked like spinach. Single leaves can be harvested or it can be used as a cut and come again green as long as you leave 2 inches behind. It is an heirloom plant, so the seeds can be saved and sown as microgreens.
