One of the treasures of the Naxos catalog is its comprehensive exploration of the classical guitar repertoire. Naxos classical guitar recordings feature some of the best guitarists of the United States, South America and Europe.  The listing here is for 34 CDs.  There is a wealth of guitar music to explore on these CDs. Many of the works are rarely recorded.  Also, the Naxos engineers know how to record a classical guitar.  Here is a summary of what is included:

  • CDs 1 - 15 are mostly the work of one composer (Bach, Barrios, Lauro, Brouwer, Costa, etc). Of these, Norbert Crafts 2 CDs are particularly recommendable, along with CDs by Richard Cobo (Brouwer), John Holmquist (Regondi), and Adam Holzman (Lauro and Mertz).
  • CDs 16 - 19, called Laureate Recordings, are recitals by prize-winning guitarists. In some cases, they are the debut recording of guitarists have gone on to record many other CDs. Ana Vidovic's Laureate CD was highly praised for her flawless technique.
  • CDs 20 - 25 all highlight the classical guitar repertoire of  regions in Central or South America.  Victor Villadangos' two recordings of music from Argentina are particularly excellent.
  • CDs 26-34.  The last 9 CDs all feature the music of Sor.   Some of the music is pedagogical (i.e., not particularly interesting, unless you are a guitarist who is practicing those works). However, there a lot of really nice music on the Sor CDs, with representation by excellent guitarists like John Holmquist, Norbert Craft, Jason Viaux, and Jeffery McFadden.
