Listed here is a group of 11 CDs of classical guitar music.  All were issued on small or independent labels. The repertoire on these CDs will be a welcome treat for those who already have ample representation of Granados and Albeniz in their collections. The music here is excellent, interesting and perhaps unfamiliar to most classical guitar fans. About half of the music (the first 5 CDs) is primarily from the 20th century. Susanne Mebes is an excellent, subtle interpreter in this repertoire; Raphella Smits excels in modern music, and Franz Halasz gives the listener a jolt with his power and commanding technique.  The remaining CDs are primarily focused on music of the early 19th century.  Four CDs are by David Starobin, who always finds ways to make his CD's extremely interesting.  The Regondi CDs consist of solo guitar pieces, but also some ensemble works, as well as a CD of contemporary music from Eastern Europe. Also included is Starobon's excellent CD of Sor and Giuliani. Hoppstock's CD explores the works of Sor and two of his lesser-known contemporaries. The Grondona CD is fascinating because he performs on a guitar built by the legendary 19th century luthier Antonio de laTorres.
