Edward is an old and kind engine who helps Sir Topham Hatt keep the other engines in line when they are rude or cause trouble.

Edward the Blue Engine is one of the first and oldest engines on Sir Topham Hatt's Railway in Thomas & Friends and The Railway Series, and the first of the current fleet to arrive on Sodor and the number 2 engine. He was also the first character created by the Rev. W. Awdry.

Edward is based on the Larger Seagull K2 (21 class) 4-4-0 from the Furness Railway.
