Jerry Garcia - Jerry Garcia Band : Pure Jerry 6 Six : Warner Theatre - Washington, D.C. - March 18, 1978 ( 3/18/1978 ) : " Jerry Made Live Recordings " : 2005 (1978/2005) Jerry Garcia Estate, LLC ( JGE ) - JGCD0006 : Very-Rare !!!!!

Jerry Garcia Band Volume Six ( 6 ) release ( 2005 Jerry Garcia Estate issue ) from the " Pure Jerry " Series : 1978 " Cats Under The Stars " Tour-Stop on 3/18/78 at the Warner Theatre - in Washington, D.C. !!  The Amazing ! Spring '78 "Cats Tour" Show ! at the Warner in DC !!!

This performance is Sheer J.G.B. Magic !!!  Right in a Huge !  ' Prime ' for this Amazing ! Garcia Band unit.  Back in the Late-80's / Early-90's, a high-quality / low-generation soundboard of this Show nicely made its rounds among tape trader circuits, and the stadium parking lots as well !  And, I was always thrilled to see that this one got spread around good, because it is a truly-magical performance by Garcia & Co..   The only problem was that this A+ tape that was being well-traded was only a 1-tape 90 minute version ( partial / compilation ).  And finally in 2005, this " Real Deal " digital version was gracefully bestowed upon the Deadhead-Faithful !  Close to 150 minutes of exquisite musicianship.  Both ' Complete ' Shows ( Early & Late Shows ) released just as sonically-fine as it could ever be heard. Just Incredible !  This is the tail end ( arguably ) of the J.G.B. " Golden Era " of 1976-78, prior to Jerry's brief commitment to the " Reconstruction " project.  This 3/18/78 Warner / D.C. show is being delivered on the heels of the " Cats Under The Stars " Album release, which Garcia personally has stated was the solo-project he was most fond & proud of.  As for the band itself, this was the 1st installment of dual back-up vocal singers - adding Maria Muldaur's vocal talents in conjunction with Donna Jean's fine vocal range ( with now 3-years of singing experience with the J.G.B. ).  Another change was the addition of Buzz Buchanan on drums ( replacing Ron Tutt ), who served the time-keeping duties for Jerry & Co. nicely into the early-80's ( pre-Dave Kemper era ).  But I have to say, I personally tip my cap to Good Ol' John Kahn on his massive Bass presence on this release, and all throughout this '78 Tour & era.  Like Bobby Weir, John just has a ' way ' with Jerry.  His fret board chops are hot & aggressive, and he really pushes both the rhythm & open-space jam areas to Jerry's clear liking.  I've always said that it takes some real-guts to challenge & push the Boss himself on stage, but when it goes down right like this does - Jerry keenly responds ... and you better just ' watch-out ' because here comes some serious thunder & electric-lightening !!  Jerry & John were tight as both band mates & friends, and here you can cleanly hear the early roots of them developing one of the most-underrated " Combos " in Rock 'n Roll History.  Putting it very simply, this ' Lonesome And A Long Way From Home ' will take you through a celestial/musical roller-coaster ride, and hopefully you have already taken this ride ?  If not ??  You had better get on board because it's truly one of a kind.  Seriously.  I've personally heard nearly 30 shows from this amazing 1978 J.G.B. Tour, and though many ( most all ) have their own special moments of live magic ( naturally ) ...  I still consistently turn to this one when I'm in the mood for the " JGB '78 Cats-Era " sound.  " Cats on the bandstand, give'em each a big hand, anyone who sweats that hard must be all right ! "  This pro-release is ( without question ! ) an absolute ' Must-Have ' J.G.B. Treasure ! for any serious Garcia Fan ... J.G.B. - Warner Theatre - 3/18/78 !!!  Enjoy !!!!!
