Old & In The Way ..... What a Band ! The " definition " of Tight ! Wow. One of the Best-Ever ! - no doubt. Well, as a die-hard fan for " Real " Music, and " Real " Musicianship ... I am very proud to say that I was fortunate enough to see every member of this fantastic American Band play Live, but not all at the same-time unfortunately -- as there are very few that did --- and those of you who did should count your Lucky-Stars !!! Jerry Garcia on Banjo !! & Vocals ! - David Grisman on Mandolin & Vocals ! - Peter Rowan on Guitar & Vocals ! - Vassar Clements on Fiddle ! - and John Kahn on Acoustic Bass ! Here today only two members still remain, but the spirit of all five men lives on ( and then some ! ) on this absolutely unbelievable CD - originally released on the Round Records LP label in 1975. And this leads me to my next point, as to why this was one of the craziest releases ever in the live-music world. Why ? Well, very simple ... the band played their very last live show ever together on 11/4/73 in Cotati, CA at Sonoma State University - after only about 25 shows all throughout the year of 1973. And this album was not originally debuted & released until 1975 !?! So yes, it meant that this Amazing Band ! had actually ' dis-banded ' over a year before fans throughout the nation and world got to even hear this record. I mean how prankster & backwards is that ?? One listen to this release, and you will ( naturally ... ) have " Old & In The Way " Fever - but if you heard it for the 1st time in 1975, and were dying to see them do it live - you couldn't - because they were done !! Everybody had moved on from this side project, and I suppose the main " end " was due to the fact that Garcia & Kahn were back full-force & touring in the Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders Band, which eventually evolved / changed into the " Jerry Garcia Band " and everyone was able to enjoy in one form or another all the way from 1975 through 1995. This release just has " IT ! " - and there is really no other way to put it into words. I am even inclined to say that it is one of my overall / all-time 50-100 favorite releases ever - by Any-Band !! A Strong Statement - Yes, I know ... but I'm not kidding - as this Unit is Seriously-Amazing !! - Wow !!?! These Boys are just Lightning-tight ! - the song-writing is deep, and the instrumental Attack-Zone is just spot-on & blistering hot ... not even to say that the Synergy ! between Band Members is just about at Remarkable ! & True ! " Perfection ". Enjoy !!! As it is almost humanly impossible not to - at least to my ears ... Wow !! ... " Old & In The Way " !!!!!
