1862 $20 T47 XX2 *Reproduction* CSA Currency Test Pattern/Fantasy Note.

Essay notes or bogus notes are the subject of much debate. The two notes T47 and T48 have always been collected as "types" and were thought to be "essay pieces" which were produced to show the members of the Confederate Congress that printed signatures "could survive" and be economically feasible. However, it must be noted, that except for the 50 notes (T63 & T72), the Confederate Congress never permitted printed signatures and at the time, printed signatures were generally proof that a note was counterfeit. It should also be noted that if the Congress agreed to printed signatures, the signatures would have been those of the register and treasurer, not two obscure clerks.

Several different theories exist as to where, when, and how these pieces were made. The fact that only a few dozen of each are known, and that they have turned up in old collections as well as in "hoards" of genuine currency has increased the mystery that surrounds them. We do know that the $20 notes were condemned as counterfeits when submitted to the Treasury for examination.

In this listing, the numbers XX2 and XX3 in addition to the type 47 and 48 have both been assigned, because of how paradoxical these notes (even though suspect for years) have proven to be. They are among the most sought after, and desirable pieces in Confederate note collecting.

Capture the essence of history with this meticulously crafted Confederate Note.  Each note is a photo of an original CSA Note, printed on quality non-photographic paper.  The notes are a little bigger than the original notes.
