We offer an early George III soup or sauce tureen in very good condition. We had thought that this was Sterling Silver since it is does feature a lion with the raised paw (passant) hallmark on the base (see photos). We brought the tureen to 2 different jewelers who were undecided about the composition of the piece. They leaned toward silver plate, but they were not 100% sure. Further inspection by a third jeweler using XRF suggested that this early piece is, indeed, 20% Sterling Silver plate over tin. I guess we will have to live with his judgement. We were disappointed but that doesn't take away from the artistry and craftsmanship that went into to making this great tureen from a bygone era. The tureen measures 8 1/2" tall and 12 1/8" long and 6 1/4" wide. The total weight is 1,428 grams. What a nice addition to your antique tableware collection. Lucky buyer please add $19.75 shipping. We have started the auction at a very reasonable sum as I'm sure that you will agree. Maybe the jeweler made a mistake? (smiles)
