Victorian Silver Aide Memoire Notebook and Pencil by G.H.James Hallmarked 1898 Planished Silver

A superbly stylish solid silver aide memoire from the late Victorian era. Pleasingly heavy at 73.8g, and really well made.

Fully hallmarked silver for London 1898 and complete with its original silver propelling pencil, this fabulous item has been decorated with a deeply impressed hammered finish, with a blank central circular cartouche to the front.  Fully hallmarked to front and reverse, with a registration number, too and maker's marks GHJ for George Henry James, a noted maker of quality silver items, later GHJ & Co. The hinged mechanism is held closed by the pencil, which slides into a side holder and there are two holes to the top which would have been used to attach the notebook leaves.  At the top is a large soldered loop, allowing the user to attach the book to a chatelaine or chain and keep the notebook easily to hand.  The hand applied planished finish is really beautiful, deeply struck and creating an extremely attractive effect as the indents have darker toning within.  In fine antique condition, the hinge working perfectly and the pencil mechanism working, although not currently containing lead, this can still be easily purchased from various stationery sources, including Ebay. Measuring 8.3cm x  5.4cm, this is an extremely useable and tactile item, as stylish and useful today as when it was made 126 years ago.
