A collection of 4 CDs featuring various permutations of the avant-garde jazz group known as "The Leaders," one of the key combos of the 1980s.  The core line-up of the group included pianist Kirk Lightsey, trumpeter Lester Bowie, saxophonists Arthur Blythe and Chico Freeman, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Famoudou Don Moye.  Their music grooves seductively between "in" and "out" in a manner reminiscent of the great Blue Note bands of the second half of the 1960s (Shorter, Hill, Hancock, etc.), but with a distinctive sensibility of its own.  As a bonus, I've thrown in a great and rare late-1970s album on the India Navigation label led by Cecil McBee and featuring the wonderful piano of Don Pullen, when he was at the peak of his cutting-edge brilliance.

The lot includes the following albums:

Cecil McBee: Alternate Spaces (India Navigation, 1977)

The Leaders: Out Here Like This... (Black Saint, 1988)

The Leaders: Unforseen Blessings (Black Saint, 1989)

The Leaders Trio: Heaven Dance (Sunnyside, 1989)
