Greek, PTOLEMAIC KINGS of
EGYPT. Ptolemy III Euergetes (246-222 BC). AE Tetrobol Alexandria. Obv: The
obverse features the horned head of Zeus-Ammon facing right. He is depicted
wearing a taenia (a type of headband) with a basileion (a royal diadem) over
his forehead. The border of the coin is dotted. Zeus-Ammon combines the Greek
god Zeus with the Egyptian god Ammon, reflecting the syncretism of Greek and
Egyptian cultures in Ptolemaic Egypt. Rev: The reverse inscription reads
"ΠTOΛEMAIOY-BAΣIΛEΩΣ," translating to "of King Ptolemy." It
shows an eagle with closed wings standing left on a thunderbolt, with its head
turned right. On the eagle's shoulder is a cornucopia bound with a royal
diadem. Between the eagle's legs is the letter "Λ" (lambda). The
border of the coin is also dotted. The eagle and thunderbolt are symbols
associated with Zeus, signifying power and authority. The cornucopia symbolizes
abundance and prosperity, and the letter "Λ" could be a control mark
or mint mark.
