Until very recently, books were one of the few tokens of admiration a gentleman could offer a lady were he of serious intention and hoping to court. Paul Leicester Ford wrote a number of these "romantic intentions" which were lavishly illustrated and the prose itself surrounded by elaborate borders. The cover is embossed with black and white and gilt. Dimensions: 8.5"x5.5"x.5", small enough to slip into skirt folds or hide under a pillow.

This is the 1905 edition of this story, first published in 1898, and apparently quite popular as it is narrated by horses owned by our protagonists, appealing to the whimsical no doubt.
