This is a wonderful first edition of the illustrated version of the poem Lenore by Edgar Allan Poe published by Estes and Lauriat in Boston in 1886, copyright 1885. This exquisite rare book is clothbound in a beautiful shade of green and features black and gold embossed details and gilded page edges. This edition includes 15 incredible, detailed engravings by the  Canadian artist, Henry Sandham. This book was part of my parent's rare book collection for decades. They were antiquarian booksellers in Chicago for many years. We are selling some of their amazing collection to help with my mother's care. Please read further for details and condition before bidding as we are not accepting returns on rare books. All issues are documented in photos. Feel free to ask questions before bidding if we have missed something.

Edgar Allan Poe's poem "Lenore" explores the aftermath of a young woman's death through the perspective of her fiancé, Guy de Vere, who celebrates her ascension to the afterlife, a departure from Poe's typical themes of melancholy surrounding the loss of Lenore. This work suggests the possibility of reunion in the afterlife, a recurring motif in Poe's writings. Some speculate that "Lenore" reflects Poe's personal emotions related to his wife's illness or serves as an ode to his late brother, William Henry Leonard Poe.

CONDITION: Please look through every photo to notice condition. The book is overall, in good condition but does have issues consistent with it's age. The exterior corners and edges show slight wear, interior shows cracked spine in areas, these areas are documented in the photos. The copyright page shows a smudge. There are 2 pages towards the back that were used to press flowers and this has stained the page and the flowers and leaves are still intact and lay preserved between the pages. This was probably a remembrance.
