Tower Records Limited Edition with lyrics and translation.

After Angelbrescht's death in 1965, a limited edition of 200 copies of “Pelléas et Mélisande” was released on LP as a memorial disc and distributed to those involved.

Using the rare analog master, ALTUS has mastered the recording and released it on SACD.

Angelbrescht played “Pelléas” as his special music throughout his life, and made eight broadcast recordings with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the last of which was this recording.

The French conductor Desiree-Emile Engelbrecht (September 17, 1880-February 14, 1965) was one of the few close friends of the great composer Debussy.

Their friendship began in earnest in 1912, when Angelbrescht conducted the premiere of the oratorio version of “The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian.

The concert was a great success and marked the beginning of a correspondence with Debussy.

“Mon cher Inghelbrecht” (Dear Inghelbrecht), a salutation that eventually became “Mon cher ami” (Dear Friend), and their friendship grew to include not only respect for each other's talents, but also shared feelings and secrets.

After Debussy's death in 1918, Engelbrecht devoted himself to introducing Debussy's works.

Among his most outstanding performances was his conducting of the opera “Pelléas et Mélisande” (Pelléas and Melisande).

At the age of 22, Angelbrescht saw the first performance of this opera, and wrote of his impression: “I will never be able to forget the beginning of this opera.

I will never forget the first time I heard the beginning of this opera.

For the first time since I had heard the music, I did not know what it was made of.

I would give anything to experience that magical feeling again.

In the perfect balance of these first four bars, Messager (conductor of the first performance) solved this problem thanks to a rare intuition, 'not too much, not too little,' which has nothing to do with theory and depends only on the senses.”
