An important original, hand-drawn manuscript map, Territory of Wisconsin, Milwaukee County, by noted cartographer, Increase A. Lapham in 1842. The map has Increase Lapham's signature among prominent historical Milwaukee figures. This map was found discarded in a dumpster in good condition. It does need some restoration, it is in one sheet. Please see the photos for details. The map is drawn on very delicate paper but is intact. It measures 11 1/2nches X 15 inches mounted on acid-free display board. The map was looked at by several Milwaukee map experts.
- Increase Allen Lapham(Born Palmyra, NY March 7, 1811 Died Oconomowoc, WI September 14, 1875) was an American author, scientist, andnaturalist, whose work focused primarily on the what is now the U.S. state ofWisconsin.He made maps of the area and published numerous books on the archaeology, biology, and geology of the region, and discovered both the Panther Intaglio Effigy MoundandMilwaukee Formation. He founded the Wisconsin Natural History Association and served as the state's chief geologist for two years. He also lobbied Congress and the Smithsonian Institution to establish an agency to predict the weather around the Great Lakesand this became the National Weather Service.
