Following extensive discussions on the penny's economic viability, Canada's Standing Senate Committee on National Finance recommended its discontinuation in 2010, arguing that the coin's value was diminishing due to inflation. The last Canadian penny was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint on May 4, 2012 at the Winnipeg facility. The coin now resides in the Bank of Canada Museum in Ottawa.
To honor the discontinuation of Canada's one-cent coin, the Royal Canadian Mint released the 65mm 2022 Canada 5 oz Silver Farewell To The Penny 10th Anniversary Coin. Struck from 5 troy ounces of .9999 fine silver with a stunning proof finish on a textured field, this modernized version of the one-cent design has a mintage of only 1,500.
The obverse features a right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse features a rendition of G. E. Kruger Gray's classic penny design—a single branch with twin maple leaves—reproduced on a larger scale.
Each coin comes graded by NGC as PF70 ULTRA CAMEO and sealed with a special Queen Elizabeth II label.
