A MAGNIFICENT hand knotted Oriental Art Deco silk textile rug with an
floral and Asian filigree motif and border, circa 1920-30's. ABSOLUTELY
GORGEOUS DESIGN & CONDITION! Measures approximately 25" width x 52"
length (fringe to fringe). .25"-.50" thick (very thick and well made).
Most likely an entryway rug, may also be a prayer rug. This is an
elaborately made rug with a descent thickness, it may be comprised of
silk and wool. This is from the estate of a retired museum curator that
purchased a small bundle of Persian and Oriental textile carpets, and
was said that he bought them directly from a museum.
Persian & Oriental silk rugs are the most intricate, and often most
valuable, of all hand-knotted rugs. The fine yet strong silk fibers used
in these rugs allow more knots per square inch to be tied giving a
clearer pattern with more detail and increased likeness to real-life.
The most valuable silk rugs are 100% silk from the warp and weft to the
pile. Because of their silk foundation there can be more warp strings
(visible as tassles or fringes at the ends of the rug) across with width
- meaning more knots can be tied in a given area. With the more
expensive materials coupled with finer knot counts comes more skilled
artisans.
