This is an original, vintage WWII Era US Army 1942 Old Steel Pot - Front Seam, Fixed Bale Helmet. Good condition, missing interior liner/webbing

The winged foot on the side of the helmet is a symbol representing the 3rd Battalion of the 508th Parachute Infantry Division of the US Army. They were formed in October of 1942 during WWII.

Below is the information that verifies that it was from 1942.

The “rim seam” refers to where the ends of the reinforcing strip of metal protecting the bottom edge of the helmet meet together. From 1941 to late 1944, the seam met in the front center edge of the steel helmet.

Metal loops (often, collectors will refer to these as “bales”) attached the chinstraps to the helmet. From 1941 to late 1943, these loops were welded directly to the left and right sides of the helmet.  They are referred to as “fixed loops.”

The fixed loops were rigid and were prone to snapping off the helmet. In late 1942, a “swivel loop” was adopted and was such a successful improvement that it was retained on all future production of the M1 helmets until it was phased out in the mid 1980s.
