ORIGINAL 1978 A.P. TELETYPE STORY RE: PRODUCTION OF "STAR TREK:THE
MOTION PICTURE" - UNIQUE!
My writing partner, Fred Bronson, was a publicist at NBC when this press
release came over the teletype nearly 46 years ago! It was slated for
"TV Week," a popular magazine insert in local Sunday newspapers around
the country.
The late Jerry Buck, the famous AP television writer, had the byline for
this unusual item -- probably the only one in existence after all this
time! In it, Buck refers to "ST:TOS," but most of the story is about the
upcoming movie, which wasn't even named yet! (And still over a year away
until completion!)
Within the copy, there are interviews with William Shatner, Leonard
Nimoy, and Gene Roddenberry. "I'm finally getting the feeling it's going
to happen," said Gene.
Another fun reference from the teletype roll: "A visit to the 'Star
Trek' set is like stepping into a science fiction Disneyland...the new
ship makes the TV version look like a crackerjack prize."
This RARE gem was folded when stored and is in fairly good condition,
considering its age, with some yellowing. The original tear along the
top would be where the roll was separated from other incoming stories.
Someone has written "Fred B" on the front page, to be sure it got to the
right NBC publicist.
