This is a handmade twist action ballpoint pen from the Knurl Series made by Placid Crafts. Yes, this pen is made from a Steel Rebar Rod. The Hardware on this model pen is Gunmetal. The pen is 5-1/2" long. I would consider this a standard diameter pen because the pen body is Genuine 1/2" Rebar and the knurled grip is .393. The raw REBAR pen body is very unique and not like the standard pen blanks that you buy. This pen body has a clear coat covering to help protect the body. No two of these are exactly the same because of the rebar, there may be slight differences, but all have genuine Rebar pen bodies. We make this pen in Gunmetal, Chrome, Chrome and Black, and Antique Brass, but this listing is for the Gunmetal pen only. The Knurl Series is out best seller, It is as rugged and dependable as the people that carry them.

This pen features a standard Fisher “SPR Series” Refill were developed for NASA and have been used on EVERY Space Shuttle mission both American and Russian. They are hermetically sealed with a specially formulated thixotropic ink and pressurized to about 35 PSI. They are the only refills that will write at any angle because they do not rely on gravity.

ABOUT REBAR:

Rebar (short for reinforcing bar), also known as reinforcing steel.  Common rebar is made of unfinished tempered steel. Rebar is used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and masonry structures to strengthen and hold the concrete in compression.

The majority of rebar are deformed, as opposed to round. Rebar's surface is patterned to form a better bond with the concrete.The ribs and depressions on its surface can increase the bond strength with concrete and prevent slippage. The pattern vary but usually there are two raised lines running the length of the bar 180˚apart with a spiral pattern between them. The deformed rebar is NOT ROUND. The diameter across the raised bars is larger than the diameter opposite the bars.

Rebar is tempered steel that is case hardened. The core is alloy steel but the closer to the outside the harder the steel gets. This makes drilling it a real problem. I use special hard drill bits manufactured from tungsten and molybdenum to increased hardness and with cobalt added to ensure superior heat resistance.

Placid crafts specializes in handmade pens both conventional handmade and their signature metal series pens. These are made on a metal lathe form solid metal round stock blanks; these are made from Rebar, Aluminum, Brass, and Copper. These are drilled out to 3/8” and a brass tube glued in to mount the hardware to. The Rebar is lightly cleaned on a wire wheel and sprayed with a clear coat to protect the steel from rusting. The other metal pens are turned to the proper size and the sanded for a smooth surface. These pen bodies are not sealed or coated. They will patina as each type of metal will. They will get darker as they age and the patina gives them the antique look that is so popular right now.
