ITALIAN SCHOOL

Circa 1860-1870

 'ROUGE ET NOIR' A SOLDIER WITH HIS WIFE IN A SPLENDID RED DRESS IN MANCHESTER.  DECEMBER 1861'

This fine series of drawings and watercolours are by an Italian artist H M Teatre, circa 1860-1870. We have been unable to discover anything about him except  that from our observations he must have been a professional judging from the quality of the work.

Most are portraits or figure studies and happily have been captioned by the artist. Some are dated in the 1860's and the latest 1875.

Clearly, he was much travelled and depicted scenes in England, France and many in Romania. His portraits of Orthodox priests are superb.

All are in fine condition though a few show old glue marks to the corners.

This fine watercolour drawing is of a lady in a splendid red dress with her dark uniformed husband in Manchester in December 1861. 

It is mounted on acid free free paper and board.
