Carthy attacking the Sorpe dam in Lancaster AJ.T 17 May 1943 with 617 Dambuster
Badge. McCarthy was the Commander in Formation 2 of the Dams raid under the
Wing Commander Guy Gibson. He was the only member of the five plane formation
to reach the Sorpe dam and at the third attempt his aircraft ‘T for Tom’ almost
hit the water, he then drew a perfect bead and the bomb exploded against the
dam wall. McCarthy was born in the USA
