Congressional Chaplains' Medal of Valor service ribbon. The service ribbon is a standard 1 3/8 inch ribbon, and came from the stock of the ribbon used for the limited edition commemorative medals (serial numbered) manufactured by Foxfall Medals. The original medals were issued on a special 1 3/16 inch neck drape (available as a separate item, see eBay item number 382028953239). Service ribbons were not issued with the original medals.

One of the rarest of all U.S. Medals! The medal was established by Act of Congress on July 14, 1960, to recognize the extreme heroism, and the ultimate sacrifice, of four Army Chaplains, during the sinking of the troop transport S.S. Dorchester. On February 3, 1943 the S.S. Dorchester was torpedoed, 100 miles off the coast of Greenland. The four Chaplains, Rev. George L. Fox, Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Father John P. Washington, and Rev. Clark V. Poling assisted troops into the lifeboats, and when all the life vests were gone, they gave their own life vests to those who did not have one. As the ship slid under the freezing Arctic waters, the four were seen with arms linked, praying. All four were awarded the Army Distinguished Service Cross. On January 18, 1961 twelve of Chaplains' Medal of Valor were awarded to the next of kin.
