Description:   On offer here is a genuine 1721 Stukeley map titled Ariconium (we now know the site surveyed and shown was actually Roman Magna, not Ariconium which is nearer Ross-on-Wye), in Herefordshire.

Condition:   The map is in good condition and is approximately 33 x 22 cm, ( 13 x 8.5 inches.).  Good condition with no significant damage to note.

Magnae, sometimes Magnae Dobunnorum (Latin for "The Greats of the Dobunni") to distinguish it from the Magnae of the Carvetii in northern Britain, was a Romano-British town and an important market centre for the British Dobunni tribe, located near modern-day Kenchester in Herefordshire, England. The town was shaped as an irregular hexagon, with a single main street along the line of the main Roman Road running east-west through the area, and an irregular pattern of side streets with tightly packed buildings leading off it

William Stukeley FRS, FRCP, FSA (7 November 1687 – 3 March 1765) was an Anglican clergyman and English antiquarian who pioneered the archaeological investigation of the prehistoric monuments including Stonehenge and Avebury. He was friends with Isaac Newton and was among Newton's first biographers.
