This historical Porsche prototype design dominated International Racing into the early 1970s "World Sportscar Championships."...(The world series of sports car racing).T
his "circuit" motor racing championship included the most important sportscar, endurance and road racing events in Europe and North America, where the world's largest automakers would spend millions of dollars per year competing.
Many consider this racecar design... the greatest of all time...
In the golden era of romantic, high-speed, beautiful racing machines, it scored victories at 12-hour of Sebring, the Daytona 24-hour, and was responsible for the maufacturer’s first overall win at the 24 Hours of LeMans.
The automobile had remarkable technology:
Porsche’s first 12-cylinder engine. Variants of the “flat-12” powerplant used were capable of powering this design from: 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.3 seconds, 0–124 mph (200 km/h) in 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of over 240 mph (390 km/h).
Aerodynamics had been optimized for low drag in order to do well on the long, fast straights.
An underdog for 20 years, Porsche had turned itself into the new leader of motorsports.
To this day, it also the fastest series production car ever made....
To enter new designs into Competition, factories were required to build 25 road-going examples.
However, demand outstripped supply (in this case) and 50 chassis were built in total.
These remain among the most desirable of all Vintage Racing.
