FAMILY CARTOONS
FREDERICK MAY (1891-1976)
C1947-1977

Frederick May was the nephew of the famous caricaturist/illustrator Phil May and became a noted caricaturist/illustrator in his own right.
He was born in Wallesey, Cheshire and attended the Liscard School of Art and Reading University.      The first world was then interrupted his studies and he served as an officer in the Green Howards on the Western Front.     His experiences there led him to become a Regimental chronicaller for 40 years, mostly in the Tatler magazine where he produced a cartoon of regimental gatherings, sports and social occasions associated with the Army in every edition.     These are much collected.
He was very much a family man.     He had a son Pom, a daughter-in-law Olga and a grandson Tony.     He sent them personally drawn birthday, Christmas and other memento cards over many years.       We have been fortunate to obtain a folio of some 35 of these which we are offering individually.
All are in very fine condition and are variously mounted.   One is framed.    All are signed.   Most are dated.
This section of cartoons are devoted to his grandson Tony.   They range from his earliest years in 1948 to 1968 when he is a student at University.   Clearly he doted on Tony which is evident from the drawings.
This example is Tony's individual Christmas card for circa 1960.    It is captioned "My portrait of Tony" and depicts Fred painting his portrait as a young teenager circa 1960.    It is not dated and the date is assessed.
