An unusual and colourful harbour tug operating in the United Arab Emirates.

Details of the prototype are: Built 1976 in Imia Shipyard, Tokyo, Japan; 1 of 3 ships, 125 tonnes displacement. Powered by 2 6 cylinder Nigata diesel engines through twin Kort type nozzles and four bladed props.

The full size vessel is 24m long x 7.4mbeam. I converted this down to 1/2in. to 1ft., which gave me a model of 40in. long by 14in. beam quite meaty I thought! Construction

I decided the hull would be made from parana pine by the bread and butter method. A 11/2in. x 5m length was purchased, and I cut five sections out with an electric jigsaw leaving a wall thickness of 11/2in. These were all screwed and glued together. The whole of the hull interior was covered in g.r.p. resin just to make sure it wouldn't crack up in the event of water getting in. Plywood templates were made up to coincide with each section on my drawing so now I could start carving in earnest.
