Speaker Dust Caps do a lot more than simply keep dust out of your speakers voice coil. Its always advisable to replace your old dust cap with one that is the same size, material and profile design as the original. The dust cap controls the amount of air that escapes from the coil area of the speaker. A paper cap will not allow any air flow while a screen cap will allow a maximum amount of air to be pushed out ward. Dust caps also act like a tuning mechanism on the speaker cone. Caps that appear larger than necessary to cover the voice coil may be acting as a damping device on the cone.
