Offered by JockJen Antiques:

Antique c 1912 Allerton's Gaudy Welsh Octagonal Jug with Serpent Handle.

A very pretty antique gaudy welsh jug produced in c 1912 by Allerton's in the style of the ironstone hydra jugs produced by the likes of Mason's and Ashworth's in the early to mid-19th century. The earthenware jug has an octagonal shape and a serpent handle. It has been hand painted in the sunflower pattern and the palette is that of traditional gaudy welsh - underglaze blue, iron red, green and orange with copper lustre highlights.

The jug stands 5 1/2 inches high and has an impressed number 30 on the base, as used by Allerton's c 1912. The jug weighs 380 g and is in good condition with just a very minor amount of glaze flaking, commensurate with age. This is a nice item for display and ideal for adding to a collection of gaudy welsh or jugs.
