Satyrae, Persius Flaccus Aulus. (Comm: Lucius Annaeus Cornutus,Johannes Britannicus, and Bartholomaeus. Venice: Johannes Tacuinus, de Tridino, 1499. With a woodcut engraved plate and old manuscript on parchment covered boards.[i], 63, [i] ff. A1 has woodcult engraving showing Persius at a desk, flanked by Cornutus on his right, and Britannicus and Fontius on his left, all commenting away with their pens. The book is a 4to, measuring 11.75" tall bound in old manuscript on parchment with renewed vellum spine with new label. Manuscript has red initials including some fine penwork but is quite age darkened and worn but refurbished. Interior new end pages. Original blanks are present with extensive contemporary notes in brown ink, both blanks have been repaired and remounted. A1 with the woodcut has been repaired and has some darkening. Worming at the top edge has been silked in a number of pages with some occasional minor text loss, some darkening and reddish spotting throughout. Colophon page has darkening as well as some very old marginal scribbling with a few ink splots, bottom corner of colophon page has been restored. Colophon itself has been colored in with old brown ink, last blank restored. Text surrounded by commentary on 60 lines. ISTC ipoo362000.Persius (34 AD-62 AD) was a Roman poet and an Etruscan, who admired the Stoic view of life. His works were published after his death by Cornutus and were popular into the Middle Ages. The Editio Princeps of Persius was printed in Rome about 1470. The notes of Fontius appeared in 1480, that of Britannicus in 1481 and the scholia of the Pseudo-Cornutus in Venice in 1499. The Satyres were the only works of Persius's that have survived and indeed, because he was a very slow writer who lived a short life, they may be the only things he wrote. An aged but still very handsome incunable with a wonderful old binding, beautiful engraving of the author and his commentors and a wonderful colophon showing the date November 4, 1499.
