ARRAN SMUGGLERS’ SERIES

Founded in only 1995, Arran is the only distillery on the Isle of Arran and, despite its youth, has made quite a name for itself in the whisky world. In the 1800's, however, there were more than 50 distilleries on the island, most of which operated outside the law.
The Smugglers' Series from Arran is a trilogy of three limited edition single Malts acknowledging the rich and shady history of whisky distillation from the home island.
The illicit whisky trade of the 18th and 19th centuries is the inspiration behind the Smugglers’ Series from Isle of Arran Distillery. Each new release features packaging which recalls the hiding places used by smugglers: a book which has a cut-out space to hold the bottle. Inside the bottle, the whisky itself has a heavier peat influence, which according to the distillery is similar to the whisky produced on the island of Arran in the past.

Volume 1 ‘The Illicit Stills’
The Smugglers' Series Volume 1 ‘The Illicit Stills’ is an homage to the history of less-than-legal distillation on the Isle of Arran in the 18th and 19th century.
The first volume pays homage to their forebears with an Arran dram of robust body and a heavier peat influence more redolent of the whisky produced on the island in days gone by. The presence of the heavily peated Arran is perfectly balanced by the sweetness of older Bourbon barrels. In the background the rich and fruity influence of Port Pipes has resulted in a fresh, full-bodied and complex dram evocative of their independent character.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Subtle peat reek rising from a distant fire hints at a robust character to come. Floral notes bring elegance, sweetness is shown in the form of fresh madeira cake witha maritime oiliness promising rich mouthfeel.
Palate: Juicy plums, spiced with white pepper. Wood smoke of freshly sawn pine. The palate develops with gripping tannin as white grapes begin to show. Pink wafer biscuits and a blast of spicy ginger appear before the finish.
Finish: The flavour of dried apricots fades before salty, maritime notes take over – the dying embers of smugglers’ signal fires on windswept beaches.

Volume 2 ‘The High Seas’
The High Seas whisky from the Arran Distillery is the second release in the Smuggler's Series. This series was released to celebrate the illicit distillation that took place on the island in the 18th and 19th centuries. The High Seas is made with both peated and unpeated malt, aged in rum casks and ex-bourbon barrels. The bottle comes packaged inside a hollowed out book.
This dram is a powerful marriage of whisky matured in the finest rum casks with time-honoured peated spirit and a rich layer of first-fill Bourbon barrel adding sweetness and fruit. The use of rum casks in the maturation serves as recognition of Arran’s importance, in years gone by, in the trade of diverse, black market liquor. The resulting liquid is complex, full of character and a perfect tribute to these independent characters of Arran.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Citrus fruits are at the fore, mingling with smells evocative of the outdoors; a touch of seaweed hints at coastal character. Orchard fruits, white pepper, and a subtle dry note reminiscent of fino sherry make this a complex nose. A hint of burned pine wood is in the background.
Palate: A fizzing mouthfeel with sherbet character. A fresh spearmint note appears and mingles with warm bramley apple pie and ice cream. There is tangy lime marmalade with chilli pepper heat and a whiff of smoke from a just-lit fire of pine logs. The addition of water shows honey dew melon and pear drop sweets.
Finish: Distillery character shines through; notes of apples, citrus and good body are elongated by a backbone of subtle smoke.

Volume 3 ‘The Exciseman’

In this Smugglers’ Series Vol.3 ‘The Exciseman’ Arran Distillery concludes its popular series which pays tribute to the exuberant character of those striving to outwit the Government’s representatives in the pursuit of the production of the famed Arran Waters. This final volume in the series has been matured in both ex-bourbon quarter casks and ex-Madeira casks in tribute to the casks that would have been used by the illicit distillers of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Madeira casks used are similar to the ones utilised by Arran’s illicit distillers, who often stored and transported locally produced whisky in old Madeira casks brought over from the continent by their smuggling counterparts. The Quarter Casks are a nod to the type of small casks which would have been the easiest to transport. The resulting liquid is complex, full of character and a wonderful way to end a series which has so perfectly paid tribute to the independent characters of Arran over the centuries.

Tasting Notes
Nose: The rich honeyed character is immediate on the nose, luxuriously decadent. The fresh coastal character is also evident. Apples, vanilla and a touch of spice are also subtly present with a hint of toasted oak.
Palate: It coats the tongue and the notes of apple and vanilla are in abundance. No hint of dryness on the palate, it grows in sweet intensity and provides a rounded mouthfeel. The addition of water opens up the complexity beautifully and reveals a lighter sweetness of candied lemon.
Finish: Long, luxurious and yet delightfully fresh. The notes of apple and citrus give a lightness of character whilst the body remains solidly complex and robust. A typical Arran with an added layer of sweetness.
