From the rear side cover: This booklet.... explores a varied neighbourhood characterised by both much nineteenth and twentieth century industry as well as significant twentieth century residential, retail and light-industrial development. The growth of the district is plotted from the sixteenth century into the early years of the twenty-first century.

Chapters examine famous Lincoln companies such as Ruston and Proctor, Ruston and Hornsby, Ruston-Bucyrus, William Foster and Company and James Dawson and Son, all of which had premises in New Boultham. Grand residences such as Boultham Hall and the development of Victorian and Edwardian villas, both in Doddington Road and the neighbouring section of Newark Road, are explored. The district became home to large numbers of Lincoln’s working families through the construction of substantial housing estates, especially during the middle years of the twentieth century. The booklet examines the growth of such housing during this period in Boultham, Moorland, Hykeham Road and Swallowbeck.
 
The booklet also considers the district’s schools, and both places of worship and leisure, including Boultham Park and Boultham Baths, and as it demonstrates, the city’s south-western suburbs have played an important, if somewhat neglected, part in the development of Lincoln.
