Keigetsu Matsubayashi (松林桂月, 1876-1963) was a Japanese-style painter. He was born in Yamaguchi pref. In 1894 he became a disciple of Yukoku Noguchi, a disciple of Chinzan Tsubaki (1801-1854), who in turn had studied with Kazan Watanabe (1793-1841). Keigetsu was also influenced by Saigan Takamori whose teacher was a disciple of Kazan. Keigetsu thus belonged to the lineage of the Kachin school, with Ka referring to Kazan, Chin to Chinzan.
He was a central person of the Kanten. He reached the peak of creativity from the late forties to sixties. A lot of his masterpieces were produced during this period. He became the Teishitsu Gigeiin (Imperial art expert) in 1944, and then became an executive director of the Nitten in 1949. He received Order of Cultural Merit in 1958. He founded the Nihon Nanga-in with Kyoson Yano and Shuson Kono in 1960. He became the president of the Nihon Nanga-in in 1961.
