Antique Celluloid Kushi-Kanzashi Hair Ornament


This item came from the Gion Kobu Geisha District of Kyoto. It is made of a vintage type of celluloid, lacquered in black & red with tiny inlaid golden cherry blossom petals (one petal missing).


It ia probably 60-80 years old. It Measures: 10cm (4") in length.

Weight: 10g


Kanzashi like this are normally not used as a comb but rather worn as an ornament in the hair. It is in excellent condition for its age with only minor signs of use.


Note that the teeth of antique combs occasionally contain a kind of wax called “Bintsuke Abura” which is used to shape “Nihongami" hairstyles - it is often possible to remove it if you are careful not to damage the lacquer.
