Description: Thumann, Paul (1834-1908) Crystoleum, The Vase Painter c1900 - Original frame.
Signed and resembling a reverse glass painting, crystoleums (also known as a chromo-photograph) are a combination of print and hand painting that gained huge popularity in the 30 years from 1885. Prints of original paintings were pressed up against curved glass, the paper gently rubbed away until just the emulsion was left adhering to the back of the glass. Small details were then painted to the back, and a second layer of glass with larger areas of painted color was added. Though thousands were painted, few survive in this condition.
Condition: Crystoleum in excellent apparent condition with no observable noteworthy issues. Frame in great condition with some signs of display wear, chips, wear to gilt.
Measures Approx., 7.75" x 10" (14.5" x 17" framed)
