Mardi: And a Voyage Thither by Herman Melville.  NY: Harper & Brothers, 1849.  In two volumes, 365 pages and 387 pages.  With 8 pages of advertisements.

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION.

Melville's third book, and what he called "a romance of Polynesian adventure."

Condition:  Both volumes are bound in blind-embossed brown cloth ("A"), with gilt lettering on the spines. The gilt has faded. Volume I has some foxing throughout, some cloth loss on the bottom of the spine, and is missing its front free endsheet.  The second blank page is missing a corner, and the front hinge has started.  Volume II also has some foxing, and small splits to the cloth at the spine.  All the corners are bumped, and both volumes have wear to top and bottom of spine.  Still, a sturdy pair, and not unusually worn for their age.  Please see photos.
