A wonderful vintage lithograph print by one of China’s Master of Chinese modern brushwork Li Kuchan (1899 - 1983).  Li Kuchan was among several artist considered counterrevolutionaries under Mao’s China and were forbidden to paint.  Li Kuchan and other fiercely independent artist took advantage of moments of low surveillance to secretly paint by candlelight creating symbolically charged art that is open to multiple interpretations.  This artist specialized in bird and flower painting.

The artist inscription on the left side of this lithograph reads: 翠羽圖 (Picture of Kingfisher) 丁巳穐月 (Year of Fire-Snake (1977) Autumn Month) 李苦禅 (Li Kuchan).

The seal reads:  李氏苦禅 (Master Li Kuchan).

The printed inscription beneath reads: 翠羽圖 李苦禅作 - Picture of Kingfisher Painted by Li Kuchan
