Gr 9 Up-Liberty's widowed mother is trying to make a go of the family's Christmas tree farm in Depression-era Texas. When it looks as though the bank will repossess the farm, the16-year-old launches a risky effort to raise the mortgage money. With the help of a Mexican American boy she meets in a hobo camp and after some desperate misadventures, she succeeds in getting the farm's venerable Nordmann fir tree to Austin in time to win the $500 prize for the finest Christmas tree in Texas. Only incidentally a Christmas story, this novel will be most appreciated for its depiction of rural Texas in the 1930s, including the widespread bias against Mexican Americans.
